The more symmetrical the shape, the more valuable the pearl will be. Exact symmetrical shapes include round, pear shape, tear shape, and oval. Pearls of asymmetrical shape are termed baroque.
All pearls in a strand should be a good match in regard to lustre, orient and colour. Roll a strand of pearls along on a flat surface to determine if all the pearls are strung through their exact centres.
